The story begins on January 20, 1912, when three unique groups officially joined together in northern Illinois to become the DeKalb County Soil Improvement Association. The resulting farmer cooperative was dedicated to making farming better, to find a way to improve yield results for all those whose livelihood depended upon the land. A century later, that passion to do more for farming lives on as the DEKALB® brand continues to advance the industry with innovation and improved yield performance in a wide variety of geographies and growing conditions.
This book commemorates the brand's first 100 years through pictures and artwork, paying tribute to the farmers, company employees, innovators, DEKALB dealers, unique products, and the advertising and events that mark and celebrate its history.
This artistic repository of DEKALB includes abbreviated historical details and is not intended to encompass the full scope of the company's rich history. Dates and details in the following pages have been approximated when accuracy was in question.
Though this book was made possible with funding from Monsanto and the DEKALB brand, much of the credit for its vast content and photographs is thanks to the assistance and collections from the DEKALB Alumni Association, the Dekalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association, Inc., and the DEKALB Agresearch, Inc., collection located in the Regional History Center at Northern Illinois University. Their love of DEKALB and the preservation of its history is truly second to none.
